Apophyllite

Apophyllite is not classified as a zeolite, but it is often found in similar geological environments. Apophyllite is a striking group of crystals that come in a variation of colors. The shape and layout of these crystals look like many pyramid-like prisms stacked on top of and around one another. The apophyllite crystal structure consists of many layers, this is what gives it its pearly sheen and unique shape. It has a fascinating history and many unexpected uses.

Apophyllite is a potassium-calcium fluoride-silicate mineral. Its name refers to a specific group of minerals that it belongs to; it was originally named to represent the most common type of Apophyllite, but since more varieties have been discovered, it now refers to the whole group. These crystals are found in ancient lava and basalt flows; they grow in solidified cavities, called amygdules, vesicles, or geodes, which are formed by air bubbles when the rock was still a liquid and they grow in Tetragonal shapes. There are a few different types of Apophyllite, but the most common one is white or clear Apophyllite (Hydroxyapophyllite). However, it can also be found in muted shades of green (Fluorapophyllite), as well as yellows, reds, browns, and pinks (Natroapophyllite).

Less common colors are shocking-white, off-white/grey, and rose-red shades. The rarest and most unusual color to find in the apophyllite family is black. This black coloration is caused by inclusions of other minerals, an example of this would be Hematite. Apophyllite was first discovered in 1806 by R. J.

Hauy and was named after the Greek word for leaf because of its unique tendency to crumble when it gets heated. It has since been used for decorative and spiritual purposes and is considered a semi-precious gemstone today. Apophyllite can be safely placed in the sun for a limited time to energize and cleanse it. However, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may cause fading or discoloration, especially in the colored varieties.
