Arfvedsonite

Arfvedsonite is a relatively rare mineral, and its applications are quite limited compared to more common minerals and gemstones. This mineral is commonly mistaken or mislabeled as Nuummite or Astrophyllite. As of recent studies on Dalmation Stone (Dalmation Jasper), scientists and geologists believe the dotted inclusion within the mineral are actually Arfvedsonite. This is a huge deal in the mineral community, as it was universally agreed that the black dots were actually speckled Black Tourmaline. * It was first described and named in 1823 by the Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius in honor of his colleague, the Swedish chemist Johan August Arfwedson.

Arfwedson had discovered the element lithium in 1817, and Berzelius named the mineral arfvedsonite as a tribute to his contributions to the field of chemistry. Arfvedsonite belongs to the amphibole group of minerals, characterized by a double chain silicate structure. Its crystal structure is monoclinic, meaning it has three unequal axes, with two of them intersecting at an oblique angle. The crystal lattice of arfvedsonite consists of interconnected chains of silicon-oxygen tetrahedra and metal cations (primarily sodium, potassium, iron, and manganese). These chains are bonded together by additional oxygen atoms and hydroxyl groups, forming the overall structure of the mineral.

The presence of metal ions in arfvedsonite’s crystal structure contributes to its distinctive color and many of its other physical properties. The unique arrangement of atoms in its crystal lattice gives rise to its cleavage, pleochroism, and other optical characteristics. Arfvedsonite forms through geological processes that involve the cooling and solidification of molten rock (magma) or the transformation of pre-existing minerals under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. its occurrence is not widespread. However, there are a few notable localities around the world where arfvedsonite has been discovered, often in association with specific geological features or occurrences.

It has been found in Antartica, China, Malawi, Greenland, New Zealand, kola Peninsula, Russia, Mont Saint-Hilaire, Canada, Sweden/Norway and a few areas of the United States.
