Brookite
Brookite is a relatively rare mineral composed of titanium dioxide, making it one of three natural polymorphs alongside rutile and anatase. Although all three share the same chemical composition, they differ in crystal structure and formation conditions. Brookite crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, distinguishing it from rutile (tetragonal) and anatase (also tetragonal but structurally distinct). It typically forms as thin tabular or bladed crystals, often displaying a dark brown to reddish-brown coloration, though some specimens may appear nearly black with a metallic to submetallic luster. Its color is primarily influenced by trace impurities such as iron, which can substitute into the crystal structure during formation.
Brookite from Pakistan, particularly from the Kharan and Skardu regions of Gilgit-Baltistan, is among the most well-known and highly regarded material in the mineral world. These specimens form in alpine-type fissures and hydrothermal veins, where mineral-rich fluids circulate through fractures in metamorphic host rocks. Under these conditions, brookite crystallizes in open spaces, often alongside quartz (silicon dioxide), albite (sodium aluminum silicate feldspar), and occasionally rutile (titanium dioxide). Pakistani brookite is especially prized for its well-formed, lustrous crystals, which can occur as sharp, thin blades or tabular crystals perched on quartz matrix. Historically, brookite was first described in 1825 and named after the English mineralogist Henry James Brooke.
While it has limited industrial use compared to rutile, brookite is highly valued in the mineral collecting community due to its rarity and distinctive crystal habit. Pakistani specimens, in particular, are considered exceptional and highly collectible
