Calcite (Honey Orange)

Honey Calcite is a variety of the mineral Calcite, which is chemically calcium carbonate (CaCO₃). Calcite belongs to the trigonal crystal system (part of the hexagonal family) and exhibits standard calcite cleavage and hardness (Mohs hardness = 3). The warm golden to amber coloration of Honey Calcite is not characteristic of pure calcite (which is usually colorless or white) but results from trace impurities — most commonly iron oxides or hydroxides — and/or other minor elements, as well as possible microscopic inclusions or internal structural features that affect how light passes through the crystal. These impurities filter light and give the calcite a “honey-like” or warm amber tone. In Pakistan, high-quality calcite, including varieties like Honey Calcite, is found in several regions: for example, in the Kharan District, Balochistan.

Other known Pakistani calcite occurrences include areas in Gilgit-Baltistan and Hunza District. Typically, the calcite forms within sedimentary carbonate rocks (limestones or dolomitic limestone) or marbles, and may also occur as vein or cavity-filling calcite within fractures. In Balochistan and other Pakistani regions, calcite is part of the nonmetallic mineral resources exploited for building stone, lime, and other industrial uses. Honey Calcite specimens are often found in massive or crystalline aggregations, and sometimes with associated minerals such as quartz, fluorite, or other carbonates — depending on the host rock and local geology. Calcite occurs in sedimentary rocks (limestones, marbles), in hydrothermal veins, and as cavity or geode fillings.
