Chalcopyrite
General Summary Chalcopyrite is a copper iron sulfide mineral with the formula CuFeS₂ and is the most important copper ore worldwide. It is named from the Greek words chalkos (copper) and pyrites (strike fire), referencing its metallic luster and copper content. It is one of the earliest known copper-bearing minerals used by humans, with evidence of smelting dating back over 5,000 years. Chalcopyrite crystallizes in the tetragonal system, commonly forming massive to granular habits, though well-formed tetrahedral crystals can also occur. Its brassy yellow metallic color can sometimes be confused with pyrite, but chalcopyrite is softer and tarnishes more readily, often producing iridescent purples, blues, and greens.
Formation Chalcopyrite forms in hydrothermal veins, magmatic deposits, porphyry copper systems, and as a disseminated mineral in igneous and metamorphic rocks. It typically occurs with minerals such as pyrite, sphalerite, galena, quartz, and calcite. Its deposition is often tied to high-temperature hydrothermal fluids, making it a major indicator of copper-rich ore bodies. Weathering of chalcopyrite can produce secondary copper minerals such as malachite, azurite, and covellite. Historical Facts Chalcopyrite was one of the first ores smelted for copper in antiquity and played a central role in the Bronze Age.
