Russian Blue Fluorite is a rare and striking variety of calcium fluoride (CaF₂), belonging to the halide mineral group. Its deep indigo-to-violet-blue coloring results from the presence of trace elements—particularly rare earth elements such as europium—which substitute calcium within the fluorite crystal lattice. These substitutions influence both its color and its fluorescence. This material is primarily found in southeastern Russia, especially within the Primorsky Krai region. Major mining sites include the Nikolaevskiy Mine in Dalnegorsk and the Yaroslavsky Mine.

These locations lie within hydrothermal vein systems rich in complex minerals. Russian Blue Fluorite often forms in well-defined cubic or octahedral crystals and may display visible color zoning due to fluctuations in elemental composition during growth. What makes Russian Blue Fluorite especially distinctive is its fluorescence. Under long-wave ultraviolet light, it emits a blue-violet glow due to europium activation sites in the crystal. Unlike most other fluorites that fluoresce blue due to hydrocarbon inclusions or yttrium, Russian Blue’s response is typically sharper and richer in hue.

The formation process involves low-temperature hydrothermal activity, where mineral-saturated fluids deposit fluorite within fractures of host rocks. Russia hosts over 140 distinct fluorite-related mine listings, with significant clusters around Dalnegorsk and nearby ore bodies.
