Mica
Is a group of sheet silicate (phyllosilicate) minerals recognized for their perfect basal cleavage, allowing them to split into thin, flexible sheets. Mica species share a layered structure—silica tetrahedra bonded to octahedral sheets—yet vary widely in chemical composition and color based on trace element content. They occur in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks and are used industrially (e. g. , insulation, electronics) and metaphysically.
The cosmetics industry greatly values mica for its shimmering qualities. It is a key ingredient in many makeup products, such as blushes, eyeshadows, and lipsticks, where it adds a sparkling or pearlescent effect. Mica’s reflective and refractive properties make it an essential component in these products, enhancing their aesthetic appeal. Additionally, it is used in personal care products like moisturizers and toothpaste, providing a glittery shimmer. Fuchsite A chromium-rich variety of muscovite known for its green color resulting from Cr³⁺ substituting for Al in the lattice.
It may fluoresce pale green under UV light. Biotite A dark brown to black mica, colored by iron (Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺) and magnesium, occasionally deepened by titanium impurities. It is ubiquitous in granitic and metamorphic rocks. It is commonly employed as a thermal insulator and is also significant in geological and scientific research for determining the age of rocks. Lepidolite A lithium-rich mica with lilac to purple hues from Mn²⁺, often containing rubidium and cesium.
It’s an important lithium ore. "Purple mica" may refer to other mica types (like muscovite or phlogopite) with purple tones due to manganese, titanium, or hematite inclusions. Muscovite Typically colorless to silvery, with pale brown or faint green variations. Color arises from minor iron (yellow/brown) or chromium (green, in fuchsite variants). Phlogopite Often recognized by its light brown color, stands out due to its remarkable flexibility and resistance to heat.
It maintains its properties at higher temperatures compared to other mica types and is an excellent electrical insulator. Phlogopite finds its use in various industrial applications where high-heat stability is required, such as in furnace windows and electrical insulators.
