Natrolite is a sodium aluminum silicate hydrate belonging to the zeolite group of minerals. Its approximate chemical formula is sodium aluminum silicate hydrate. First described in 1803 in Germany by Martin Heinrich Klaproth, the name derives from the Greek natron (soda) and lithos (stone), referring to its sodium content. Natrolite forms slender prismatic or needle-like crystals, often radiating in sprays, fibrous aggregates, or compact masses. It typically develops in cavities within basalt and other volcanic rocks, but is also found in alkaline igneous complexes.

The Ice River Complex in British Columbia, Canada, is a notable locality, producing attractive specimens that highlight the delicate, radiating habit of natrolite. Other significant sources include India, Russia, and the United States. Its colors are usually colorless to white, but trace iron can produce pale pinks or yellows. Historically, natrolite has been admired primarily as a collector’s mineral rather than a decorative stone due to its fragile and fibrous nature. In Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec the 19th and 20th centuries, fine needle sprays of natrolite became popular among mineral collectors and museums, where they were displayed alongside other zeolites.
