Pyromorphite

Pyromorphite is a lead chlorophosphate mineral, chemically classified as Pb₅(PO₄)₃Cl. It belongs to the apatite group and is part of a solid solution series with mimetite and vanadinite. Pyromorphite commonly forms as hexagonal prismatic crystals, often exhibiting bright green, yellow, orange, or brown hues. Its distinctive color and barrel-like crystal formations make it a favorite among mineral collectors. The name Pyromorphite was coined in 1813 by German mineralogist Johann Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann, from the Greek words pyro ("fire") and morphe ("form")—referring to its habit of recrystallizing after being melted in a flame.

Pyromorphite typically forms in the oxidation zones of lead ore deposits, particularly galena (PbS), as secondary mineralization occurs when lead-bearing minerals weather and react with phosphate-rich waters. Deposits have been found in Germany, England, France, Australia, China, Morocco, and the United States (bunker hill mine in Idaho and also in Pennsylvania). In older European mineralogy texts, Pyromorphite was sometimes referred to as Traubenblei, meaning "grape lead," due to its globular or botryoidal habit that resembles small grapes. In mineralogical history, Pyromorphite was sometimes confused with olivenite or mimetite until advanced chemical analysis distinguished it by its chlorine and phosphate content. Despite being a minor ore of lead, its value today lies in its visual appeal and rarity.
