Amethyst was adopted as the official gemstone of Ontario in 1975. Use your imagination to travel back in time 1850 million years ago (B. P. ), to the lands near Thunder Bay, Ontario and Northern Minnesota. You would be floating in a boat near the shore of a vast ocean which covered the Lake Superior region.
A meteorite believed to be 10 to 16 kilometres in diameter hurtles from space striking the area now known as Sudbury, Ontario (700 kilometres away)! An impact crater 250 kilometres wide is created, which forms the second biggest known crater on our planet. This crater is 50% bigger than the Chicxulub Crater in the Gulf of Mexico, which scientists now believe to have been the cause of the great extinction of the dinosaurs sixty-five million years ago. Intense iron content (hematite) is what makes the tips red. This crystal is a very rare type of Amethyst that can only be found in one place in the world: Canada.
Auralite 23 is considered the name for all amethyst’s in this impact zone but not all amethysts from the area contain all 23 different types of minerals. Each piece contains a combination of about 2 to 7 different minerals from a list of 23. This stone is estimated to be around 2. 4 Billion years old & to have come from a time when everything had melted into a solution due to heat from an impacting meteorite.
