Blue Tourmaline, known scientifically as Indicolite, is a rare variety of tourmaline, a complex borosilicate mineral group composed of sodium, lithium, aluminum borosilicate with variable iron and other trace elements. Its general composition can be described as a sodium lithium aluminum borosilicate hydroxide fluoride, with the blue coloration primarily resulting from the presence of iron in its ferrous state within the crystal structure. Indicolite belongs to the elbaite species of tourmaline, which forms in the trigonal crystal system and is well known for producing elongated, striated prismatic crystals. Indicolite forms in granitic pegmatites, which are coarse-grained igneous rocks formed during the final stages of magma crystallization.

These environments are rich in volatile elements such as boron, lithium, and fluorine, which are essential for tourmaline formation. As the pegmatitic fluids cool, crystals grow in open pockets where space allows for well-formed structures. The blue coloration develops when iron substitutes into the crystal lattice, with variations in iron concentration and oxidation state producing shades from pale blue to deep indigo. Indicolite is often found in association with quartz (silicon dioxide), feldspar, lepidolite (lithium mica), and other pegmatite minerals. Notable sources include Brazil (Minas Gerais), Afghanistan (Nuristan and Kunar regions), Pakistan (Gilgit-Baltistan), Madagascar, and parts of Africa.

Indicolite is significantly rarer than many other tourmaline colors. Historically, tourmaline has been used as a gemstone for centuries, but blue varieties have always been among the most prized due to their scarcity and strong color. High-quality indicolite crystals with good transparency and rich color are considered highly collectible and valuable, especially when sourced from classic pegmatite localities known for producing gem-grade material.
