Tourmaline (Pink) - Namibia (also known as Rubellite) Pink Tourmaline, commonly referred to as Rubellite is a variety of uminum tourmaline, a complex sodium lithium al borosilicate hydroxide fluoride mineral belonging to the elbaite species. Its coloration ranges from soft pink to vivid red, with the most desirable “rubellite” tones displaying strong, consistent color in both natural and artificial light. The pink to red coloration is primarily caused by trace amounts of manganese, which substitutes into the crystal structure during formation. In some cases, subtle variations in tone can also be influenced by minor amounts of lithium and iron interacting within the crystal lattice. Namibian Pink Tourmaline forms in granitic pegmatites, which are coarse- grained igneous bodies formed during the final stages of magma crystallization.
These pegmatites are enriched in volatile elements such as boron, lithium, and fluorine— key components necessary for tourmaline formation. As the magma cools slowly, these elements concentrate in residual fluids, allowing large, well-formed crystals to grow within open pockets. Namibian deposits, particularly those in regions such as the Erongo Mountains, are known for producing high-quality elbaite tourmalines, often associated with quartz (silicon dioxide), feldspar, lepidolite (lithium-rich mica), and other pegmatite minerals.
