The material marketed as “Truffle Chalcedony” typically presents as rounded, botryoidal, or lumpy masses in deep chocolate to dark brown tones. The brown coloration is generally attributed to finely disseminated iron oxides and iron hydroxides within the silica matrix, often derived from iron-rich sedimentary environments during formation. In contrast, material sold as “Panda Agate” from the same Moroccan locality displays a lighter chalcedony base (white to grey) with distinct rounded brown nodules or orbicular inclusions — visually resembling a spotted pattern.

Despite the trade distinction, both materials are the same fundamental mineral species: chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) formed under similar geological conditions. These chalcedony nodules are found in sedimentary basins of southern Morocco, commonly associated with arid desert environments where silica-rich groundwater infiltrated cavities within host rocks. The silica precipitated in concentric or botryoidal layers, gradually forming solid masses. Iron- bearing fluids or host sediments contributed to the brown pigmentation. In many Moroccan deposits, chalcedony occurs within limestone, marl, or other sedimentary host rocks, and may be found alongside agate, jasper, or other silica varieties.

The nodular “Panda Agate” appearance forms when iron-rich concentrations create discrete orbicular or globular growth zones within lighter chalcedony, whereas the solid dark-brown “Truffle” appearance represents more uniformly iron-saturated silica. Both expressions originate from the same hydrogeochemical system, with visual differences controlled by iron distribution and fluid chemistry during crystallization. Moroccan chalcedony deposits have become increasingly recognized in recent decades as desert erosion exposes silica nodules across broad areas. The material is typically surface-collected or shallow-dug rather than extracted from deep industrial mining operations.

While “Truffle Chalcedony” and “Panda Agate” are trade names rather than formal mineralogical classifications, the material is properly identified as chalcedony (a variety of quartz).
