Faden Quartz is a distinctive growth habit of quartz composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). It forms in low-temperature hydrothermal or alpine-type fissures, where tectonic stress repeatedly fractures and reheals the quartz during growth. This process produces the characteristic white, thread-like “faden line” running through the crystal. The “string” itself is not a foreign inclusion; instead, it consists of repeated microscopic fluid-inclusions, gas layers and healed microfractures that scatter light, creating a continuous internal line that marks the crystal’s episodic growth history. This feature is entirely unique to Faden Quartz and serves as a visible record of its tectonic and geological evolution.

Faden Quartz from Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan is among the world’s most renowned. It forms in high-altitude metamorphic and pegmatitic zones within the Himalayan–Karakoram orogenic belt, where immense pressure from continental collision generates deep fissures. These pockets are slowly filled by silica-rich hydrothermal fluids. As the host rock experiences repeated movement, the partially formed quartz repeatedly breaks and regrows, thickening and elongating the central “faden” line. Skardu specimens commonly form flattened, tabular crystals, sometimes in chains or stacked clusters, and may occur with muscovite, chlorite, feldspar, or other alpine-vein minerals.

Mining Faden Quartz in Skardu is physically demanding and often dangerous. The deposits occur at remote, steep, high- elevation sites that are typically accessible only by foot, mule transport, or narrow mountain tracks. Miners ascend loose talus slopes or cliff-side paths to reach small pocket openings in pegmatites and metamorphic fissures. Hand tools— chisels, hammers, small wedges, and sometimes controlled micro-fracturing—are used to expose the delicate quartz pockets. Because Faden Quartz grows in fragile, fracture-prone fissures, miners work slowly to avoid damaging the crystals.

Extreme weather, thin air, unstable rock, and long treks make extraction difficult, and each pocket yields relatively few specimens, contributing to their rarity and value.
