Siderite

Siderite is an iron carbonate mineral composed of iron(II) carbonate. It belongs to the calcite group of carbonate minerals and typically forms in rhombohedral crystals, often displaying curved faces and a vitreous to pearly luster. Its color ranges from honey-brown and tan to deep reddish-brown, influenced by oxidation of iron and minor elemental substitutions such as magnesium, calcium, or manganese. Siderite was first described in 1845 and derives its name from the Greek word sideros, meaning “iron,” reflecting its composition and historical importance as an iron ore. In earlier centuries, it was mined extensively as a primary source of iron before more efficient ores became dominant.
In Pakistan—particularly within the Skardu and Gilgit-Baltistan regions—siderite is found in hydrothermal veins and metamorphic environments, often in association with quartz, as well as with minerals such as pyrite, fluorite, and calcite. These deposits form when iron-rich fluids circulate through fractures in host rock, precipitating siderite as temperatures and pressures decrease. The host rocks are typically metamorphosed sediments or hydrothermally altered zones within mountainous terrains shaped by tectonic activity related to the Himalayan orogeny.
